Building Back Safer: Earthquake Assessments to Strengthen Myanmar’s Infrastructure

Rohan Shinde, disaster risk reduction expert, has been on the ground in Mandalay, Myanmar, conducting critical post-earthquake structural assessments to help communities recover and rebuild safely.

In partnership with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), the Miyamoto engineering team is performing onsite evaluations of schools, hospitals, and housing. These assessments are guided by ATC-20, the internationally recognized standard for rapid post-earthquake safety evaluations. This ensures that decisions about occupancy and repair needs are based on sound engineering judgment and global best practices.

Our team is using electronic data collection tools and managing the information with ArcGIS, allowing us to generate high-resolution geographical analyses in real time. This geospatial approach not only improves accuracy and efficiency but also enables us to map out damage patterns across affected areas. These insights are vital for prioritizing recovery and reconstruction efforts where they are needed most.

This collaboration with UNOPS is about more than damage assessment—it’s about rebuilding stronger. Together, we aim to enhance Myanmar’s disaster-resilient infrastructure and support rapid, effective recovery. By focusing on schools and healthcare facilities, we are helping restore the critical services that form the backbone of community strength and economic recovery.

Every structure assessed brings us one step closer to a safer, more secure future for Mandalay.

Stay tuned for updates and photos from the field as our mission continues.
