Building Resilience: How Urban Communities in Indonesia Are Facing Climate and Disaster Risks

Indonesia stands at a critical intersection of rapid urbanization and climate vulnerability. With 56% of the country’s population now residing in urban areas, Indonesia’s cities face unprecedented exposure to natural disasters and climate change impacts. This concentration of people in urban environments creates unique challenges for disaster preparedness and response.

The need for robust disaster risk reduction initiatives in these urban zones has never been more pressing. Recognizing this urgency, USAID’s KUAT (Komunitas Perkotaan Untuk Aksi Tangguh) program has emerged as a vital intervention specifically designed for Indonesia’s urban landscape. KUAT focuses on the Greater Jakarta area, one of the world’s most densely populated urban regions and one that faces multiple disaster threats.

At its core, KUAT aims to strengthen disaster risk governance while building community capacity to manage disaster risks effectively. The program implements a comprehensive approach to multi-hazard risk reduction, acknowledging that urban communities face complex, interconnected threats that require coordinated solutions.

What makes initiatives like KUAT particularly effective is their emphasis on active community participation. When urban residents become engaged stakeholders in disaster preparedness, the results are transformative. Communities that actively participate in information exchange and disaster preparedness learning show remarkably faster recovery times when disasters strike.

As global leaders continue discussions about climate adaptation at forums like COP28, programs like KUAT demonstrate practical pathways toward building #ResilienceForAll. In our rapidly changing world, where climate change effects continue to intensify, such community-based approaches offer a blueprint for how vulnerable urban populations can not only survive but thrive in the face of increasing environmental challenges.
