Devastating Earthquake Strikes Eastern Afghanistan

A powerful magnitude‑6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan near the provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, around midnight on Sunday. The epicenter was located in the mountainous border areas between the two provinces, inflicting catastrophic damage on remote villages.

Human Toll and Structural Devastation

  • At least 812 people have died, and over 2,800 have been injured, marking one of the deadliest quakes Afghanistan has seen in recent years.
  • In Kunar Province alone, approximately 610 fatalities were confirmed, with 12 more deaths reported in Nangarhar.
  • Other reports cite over 800 deaths and 2,500 injuries, with entire villages, especially in Kunar’s mountainous districts—flattened.
  • The destruction was especially severe in villages constructed with mud-brick or stone, housing that failed catastrophically under the quake’s force.

Rescue Efforts Amidst Challenges

  • Rescue operations are underway: military teams, medical personnel, and helicopters have been mobilized, with 40 evacuation flights transporting both wounded and deceased from hard-to-reach areas.
  • Local residents, alongside security forces and medics, are combing through rubble, although rugged terrain and frequent aftershocks continue to impede access and communication.

A Nation Under Strain

  • Afghanistan’s capacity to respond is seriously hampered. Foreign aid has plummeted—from $3.8 billion in 2022 to just $767 million in 2025.

Seismic Context and Historical Vulnerability

  • This earthquake joins a pattern of deadly seismic activity in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, driven by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
  • This marks the third major deadly earthquake since 2021 in the country.
