Miyamoto International provided structural engineering services at the Suisun Valley K-8 school for the new wood-framed administration and library building and the modernization of an existing adjacent multi-purpose building. The new building features several prominent “flying roofs” at its corners, welcoming its visitors to the entrances. Some of the special elements of this building were the large exterior openings, especially at the entry, the long spans and the roof system’s large number of glulam applications. Exposed natural wood framing was utilized in the library space, providing a warm environment for young readers. Unique challenges solved by the team include the roof’s many dramatic skewed connections and several roof elevation changes, accommodated by pony shear walls and local bracing elements.
