The Lafayette Park Recreation Center is the first completed LEED-certified building for the client, the City of Los Angeles. The project consists of a 15,000 SF addition to, and remodel of an existing building resulting in an L-shaped plan. Along the interior edge of the building, a ramped entry provides access to the gymnasium from the surrounding park. A lobby and classroom are available for public use. Additional classrooms, a kitchen, dining and dance areas are placed within the existing building. On the northern side of the gymnasium, glass extends from the floor to nearly 30 feet above the ground, providing plenty of natural light. Operable windows allow for natural cross-ventilation throughout the building. These are only some of the sustainable features that were designed to meet the stringent objectives of the federal Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. This project used a caisson foundation.
