Japan

Miyamoto International office in Japan, Miyamoto Disaster Risk Management Japan, serves as a localized technical hub of the region’s knowledge and technology on disaster resilience and sustainable infrastructure within disaster-prone areas facing climate challenges and growing geo-hazard risks.

Japanese leading engineering experts serve on Miyamoto Japan’s advisory board that specializes in knowledge development and resilience building across infrastructure sectors including energy, transportation, communications, and water. Miyamoto Japan’s work generates best practices around disaster risk management and disaster preparedness training with a focus on hazard mitigation and climate change adaptation.

As subject matter experts, the advisory board members apply and appropriately adapt Japanese engineering technology, disaster risk reduction knowledge, and techniques global resilience challenges. Providing support to Miyamoto International Japan, advisory board members contribute to subject matter workshops, provide input for information sharing platforms, and consult on Miyamoto International regional and global projects.

Miyamoto has completed hundreds of post-disaster forensic investigations on infrastructure failure around the world, such as our collaboration with the Tokyo Institute of Technology after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. There is a great opportunity for leadership and resilience models in both traditional and low-carbon or nature-based solutions (NbS) infrastructure; however critical gaps in technical and infrastructure governance capacity and lack of access to data, among others, further exacerbate countries’ vulnerability and exposure and impedes the mainstreaming of resilience in infrastructure programming.

Japan has been vulnerable to a multitude of disasters that have resulted in substantial investments in resilient infrastructure and the development of Japanese expertise in disaster risk reduction. Miyamoto’s Japan office is focused on learning from the Japanese experience and bringing lessons learned, best practices and infrastructure and disaster risk reduction expertise to serve disasterprone communities around the world.
