FAQs

At Miyamoto International, we’re often asked about how we make the world a better, safer place through our unique combination of world-class engineering and humanitarian work – here are some of your most common questions.

What does Miyamoto International do?

We are a global structural engineering and humanitarian firm that operates in three main areas:

  • Structural and earthquake engineering for buildings and infrastructure
  • International disaster response and recovery
  • Humanitarian assistance and disaster risk reduction We design new buildings, retrofit existing ones, respond to disasters worldwide, and help communities become more resilient to natural hazards.

We’ve been serving communities since 1946, when our company was founded in Sacramento, California by Arthur A. Sauer as a structural engineering firm. Under Dr. Kit Miyamoto’s leadership since 1997, we’ve evolved into a global engineering and humanitarian organization with 30 worldwide locations.

We uniquely combine world-class engineering expertise with humanitarian impact. We are strategically located in earthquake-prone regions worldwide, allowing us to respond rapidly to disasters while maintaining local expertise. We’ve analyzed over 100 global disasters, assessed more than 600,000 damaged buildings, and reconstructed over 50,000 structures.

When disaster strikes, we:

  • Conduct rapid building safety assessments
  • Provide technical expertise for reconstruction
  • Train local engineers and construction workers
  • Develop repair strategies and guidelines
  • Work with governments and organizations to implement recovery plans
  • Help communities build back safer and stronger

While we’re particularly known for earthquake engineering and response, we work on multiple types of natural hazards including hurricanes, floods, and conflict zones. We also provide comprehensive structural engineering services for new construction and renovation projects across various sectors including healthcare, education, commercial, and civic buildings.

Miyamoto Relief is our non-profit organization launched in 2011. While Miyamoto International is our for-profit engineering firm, Miyamoto Relief focuses on providing technical assistance for disaster reconstruction in communities lacking financial resources, often working with NGOs and funded by private donors.

We’ve impacted over 6.1 million lives through our combined U.S. and global engineering work, with 2.1 million lives impacted through U.S. operations and 4 million through global operations. This impact comes through safer buildings, disaster response, and community resilience work.

We have 30 offices worldwide, strategically located in earthquake-prone regions. Our offices span across the United States and countries including Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Haiti, Italy, Turkey, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Indonesia, Japan, and New Zealand.
