Our client at Atas Fuel Oil Facilities asked for a risk-mitigation recommendation plan for natural hazards, including earthquake risk for the tank farm area. The services provided were structural and geotechnical performance assessments for a risk-mitigation recommendations for the existing structures, including oil storage tanks. The challenge of this specific project was to identify the best solution to minimize economic losses by determining the most suitable retrofit application methods to avoid business interruptions. Tank foundations subject to unacceptable large displacements during an earthquake (due to weak soil conditions) especially became a challenge to overcome business interruption at the retrofit stage, as they were surrounded by dense piping in use.
