Description

The post-earthquake sustainability of the Margarine Production Unit of the Unilever Çorlu Facility in Tekirdağ, Çorlu, Turkey was evaluated by Miyamoto engineers. The production unit consists of three reinforced concrete buildings that are connected by steel trusses. The buildings did not meet the seismic performance requirements of Turkish Earthquake Code. Since the buildings are vital for production, a retrofit design with minimum business interruption was implemented. In the retrofit design, viscous dampers were used to mitigate the weak direction of the buildings. Out of 10 dampers total, eight were used in a diagonal bracing configuration and two were used horizontally in a chevron brace configuration. The latter configuration was selected where diagonal bracing clashed with mechanical equipment. Damping force capacities of the dampers are 500kN for horizontal and 750kN for diagonal dampers. This is a highly efficient solution for damping earthquake forces.
