
Less than seven weeks after Venezuela’s catastrophic earthquake sequence, Latin America has been struck again. A magnitude 7.4 earthquake hit western Colombia on Monday, August 10, 2026, causing structural damage across multiple cities and triggering evacuations as far away as Bogotá, Ecuador, and Panama.
The Event
The earthquake struck at approximately 9:41 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located near San José del Palmar — a small municipality of roughly 4,800 people in Colombia’s Chocó department, about 400 kilometers west of Bogotá. The USGS recorded a depth of approximately 107 kilometers, while Colombia’s own Geological Survey (SGC) placed the depth at 96 kilometers. Both agencies agreed on the M7.4 magnitude, though the SGC’s preliminary reading came in at 6.6 before being reconciled with USGS data.
The relatively deep focal depth — more than 100 kilometers below the surface — is a significant engineering factor. At that depth, seismic energy disperses more gradually as it travels upward, which reduces peak ground acceleration at the surface compared to a shallow rupture. The June 24 Venezuela doublet, by contrast, struck at just 10 kilometers depth, which is why the surface shaking there was so severe. In the Colombia event, the depth likely prevented an even worse outcome — but at M7.4, the energy released was still more than sufficient to cause serious structural damage across a wide area.
Felt Area and Initial Damage
The shaking was felt across a broad swath of western and central Colombia, including Bogotá, Cali, MedellÃn, Pereira, Manizales, Armenia, Popayán, and Quibdó. It also reached neighboring Ecuador — where it interrupted the national holiday commemorating the First Cry of Independence — as well as Panama, where light shaking was reported in Panama City and Darién province with no structural damage confirmed there.

The hardest-hit area near the epicenter was Quibdó, the capital of Chocó with a population of approximately 130,000. Governor Nubia Córdoba confirmed injuries and serious building damage in the city. Footage circulating on local media showed partial and full collapses of homes and smaller structures in Pereira, Cali, and Quibdó. The mayor of Cali — Colombia’s third-largest city — also reported significant structural damage. In Bogotá, Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán confirmed that some buildings sustained cracking but reported no catastrophic collapses in the capital. Precautionary evacuations were carried out at major hospitals in Quito, Ecuador. As of this writing, no official death toll has been confirmed by national authorities.
Why This Region Is Seismically Active
Colombia sits at one of the most tectonically complex junctions in the Western Hemisphere. The country is bounded by three major tectonic plates — the South American, Nazca, and Caribbean — which interact along a network of subduction zones and transform faults. The Nazca Plate subducts beneath the South American Plate along Colombia’s Pacific coast, while the Caribbean Plate converges from the north. This triple interaction produces a high frequency of seismic activity, particularly in the western and central Andean regions.
The Chocó department, where Monday’s earthquake originated, sits in a zone where the Panama microplate also plays a role — creating additional complexity in how stress accumulates and releases along fault structures in the region. Colombia has a well-documented history of destructive earthquakes, including the 1999 Armenia earthquake (M6.1) which killed more than 1,000 people and destroyed tens of thousands of buildings in the coffee-growing region.
Engineering Context
The relatively deep focal depth of Monday’s earthquake is both a mitigating and complicating factor from an engineering standpoint. A deeper rupture means lower peak ground acceleration at the surface, but it also means the shaking is felt over a much larger geographic area — which is exactly what happened here, with prolonged shaking reported across multiple countries. For structures not designed to resist lateral seismic forces, even moderate ground motion sustained over a longer duration can cause cumulative damage, particularly to older masonry and non-engineered buildings.
Colombia’s seismic building code has evolved significantly since the 1990s, with NSR-10 (the current standard, updated in 2010) incorporating modern seismic design requirements comparable to international benchmarks. However, as with most rapidly urbanized cities in the region, a significant share of the existing building stock predates these provisions — particularly in informal settlements and smaller municipalities like those in Chocó.
Regional Seismic Pattern
Monday’s event comes less than seven weeks after the June 24 Venezuela earthquake sequence — two M7.0+ events that killed more than 5,000 people and destroyed hundreds of buildings across northern Venezuela. While these events are on separate fault systems and are not seismically linked, their proximity in time is a stark reminder of how seismically active the northern Andes and Caribbean convergence zone remain. The entire arc from Venezuela through Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru sits along one of the most energetic tectonic boundaries on earth.
What Comes Next
The immediate priority is search and rescue in the areas closest to the epicenter, particularly in Chocó where structural collapses have been confirmed. Rapid damage assessment in Pereira, Cali, and Quibdó will be essential in the coming 24–72 hours to identify buildings requiring immediate evacuation or stabilization, and to distinguish collapsed structures from those that are damaged but still repairable.
Aftershock hazard will remain elevated. Following a M7.4 mainshock, the probability of a M6.0 or larger aftershock in the following week is significant, and weakened structures that survived the mainshock face elevated collapse risk in follow-on events.
The pattern across this region — Venezuela in June, Colombia today — underscores a consistent and urgent message: seismic resilience is not a theoretical future concern. It is an active, present-day priority for millions of people living along the Andean convergence zone, and the cost of deferred mitigation is measured in lives.
