VENEZUELA — Miyamoto International engineers have arrived in the Venezuela earthquake zone to provide structural engineering support for urban search and rescue operations following the recent major earthquakes in northern Venezuela.
The work is focused on evaluating damaged and collapsed structures so search and rescue teams can understand stability conditions, identify potential hazards, and conduct operations with the highest possible level of safety.
Deployment and Coordination
Miyamoto’s engineering support is embedded with international USAR responders, including teams from Búsqueda y Rescate Internacional de Cancún and the Red Cross. The deployment began in Toluca, Mexico, where teams coordinated personnel, search equipment, and heavy rescue resources before departing for Venezuela.
After significant logistical delays and a change in landing location, the teams arrived at Maiquetía Airport in the early morning hours, where humanitarian relief flights were being received under disrupted airport conditions.
Initial Field Observations
Upon arrival, responders observed that normal airport operations were severely limited. The terminal appeared largely dark, and visible interior damage included extensive disruption to suspended ceiling systems in departure lounge areas. The terminal building was closed, requiring teams to manage unloading and coordination under constrained conditions.
Several tons of USAR equipment were unloaded by the rescue teams with limited logistical support before personnel and equipment were processed through an improvised registration and clearance area supported by United Nations personnel.
Technical Support to Search and Rescue Teams
Structural engineering support is a critical part of USAR operations after major earthquakes. Engineers help assess whether damaged buildings, partial collapses, and surrounding structures present immediate risks to rescuers, survivors, and response personnel.
Miyamoto will continue coordinating with local and international partners as needs become clearer, supporting situational awareness, structural safety guidance, and early response planning in affected areas.
