In the aftermath of the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025, with tremors felt as far as Bangkok, Miyamoto International Thailand, led by Dr. Kit Miyamoto and Giulia Jole Sechi, engaged in critical discussions with Thailand’s Department of Mineral Resources and the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment. The focus was on analyzing the structural performance during the quake and understanding the geological and geotechnical factors that influenced these outcomes.
The earthquake, originating from the Sagaing Fault, resulted in significant damage across Myanmar and neighboring regions. In Bangkok, over 1,000 kilometers from the epicenter, the collapse of a 33-story office tower under construction highlighted the vulnerabilities in high-rise structures, especially those built on soft soil foundations.
Our collaboration emphasized the need for innovative policy approaches to bolster Thailand’s resilience. We identified potential studies supported by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to enhance preparedness and response strategies. GIS technology has proven effective in disaster risk management by accurately mapping vulnerable areas and aiding in the development of evacuation strategies.
We are honored to contribute our expertise to Thailand’s earthquake resilience efforts and look forward to continued collaboration on implementing these critical safety measures.
