Miyamoto’s Award-Winning Design: San Jose City College Career Education Complex Receives Citation Award

We are proud to announce that the San Jose City College Career Education Complex—a collaborative project between Miyamoto International, Steinberg Hart, and Flint Builders—has been honored with a Citation Award (bronze medal) in the Unbuilt/Research/Competition category for 2023. This prestigious recognition highlights the innovative structural design and forward-thinking approach our team has brought to this transformative educational project.

Project Highlights

The $125 million design-build project encompasses:

  • Construction of a new four-story, 85,000-square-foot facility
  • Renovation of the existing 35,000-square-foot Building 200
  • Comprehensive site improvements creating an integrated educational complex

Miyamoto’s structural design features buckling-restrained braced frames for superior lateral resistance, ensuring both safety and flexibility in the building’s design. This innovative approach allows for open, adaptable spaces that can evolve with educational needs while maintaining structural integrity in California’s seismic environment.

Educational Impact

When completed, the Career Education Complex will serve as a dynamic hub for career-focused education in San Jose, featuring:

  • State-of-the-art classrooms and computer labs
  • Specialized training facilities for skilled workers
  • Modern offices and student support spaces
  • Community and social gathering areas
  • Food service amenities
  • Dedicated spaces for medical, business, and information technology disciplines

The design emphasizes connectivity between educational spaces and industry partners—a critical feature for preparing graduates to enter Silicon Valley’s competitive workforce. The flexibility built into both the new construction and renovation components will allow the college to adapt to evolving educational trends and industry needs.

Award Significance

The Citation Award recognizes not just architectural excellence, but also the project’s potential to transform educational delivery and workforce development in the region. The judges particularly noted how the design successfully integrates:

  • Flexible learning environments adaptable for various programs
  • Intentional connections between campus and community
  • Spaces that facilitate direct engagement with industry leaders
  • Forward-thinking structural solutions that support educational innovation

This recognition validates Miyamoto International’s commitment to creating resilient, purposeful structures that serve communities for generations to come.

The Career Education Complex is currently under construction and scheduled for completion soon. We look forward to sharing more updates as this award-winning project comes to life on the San Jose City College campus.
