Burlingame Point stands as a landmark achievement in the San Francisco Peninsula, redefining the waterfront with its $400-million, 18-acre development. This expansive project features four mid-rise office and R&D buildings, a six-story parking structure, and a two-story amenity building—totaling an impressive 767,000 square feet of office, R&D, retail, and life-science space. As one of the region’s largest office and research developments, Burlingame Point transforms a once-vacant site—formerly home to a drive-in theater—into a thriving innovation hub.
Miyamoto’s Role in Engineering Excellence
The Miyamoto SF team played a crucial role in overcoming the site’s structural challenges while realizing the architect’s bay-inspired vision. Given the peninsula’s seismic considerations, we designed advanced structural systems that included:
🔹 Three seismically separate podiums to enhance earthquake resilience.
🔹 A mix of three lateral systems: buckling-restrained braced frames, special moment-resisting frames, and shear walls for optimal stability.
🔹 A specialized concrete moment frame system supporting the amenity building.
🔹 A reinforced concrete shear wall system for the parking structure.
🔹 Custom façade-supporting systems to achieve the architectural aesthetics inspired by the San Francisco Bay.
The result is a development that not only meets the region’s seismic safety needs but also sets new standards for sustainability, earning 2021 LEED® Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Burlingame Point is a testament to innovative engineering, urban transformation, and sustainable design—another example of how Miyamoto is shaping the future of resilient infrastructure.
