Immediately following the devastating magnitude 6.3 earthquakes in Herat Province, Miyamoto International deployed its rapid assessment team. The team evaluated extensive damage across 11 villages in the Zinda Jan district, where over 100,000 people were exposed to high-intensity ground shaking. Our experts provided critical analysis of structural failures, particularly in traditional mud-brick and domed-roof houses, and delivered urgent recommendations for immediate and mid-term shelter solutions. These included culturally appropriate, temporary “bunkers” to protect families from the harsh winter and guidance on rebuilding with safer, earthquake-resistant vernacular techniques.
