60 Ghuznee Street

The heritage building at 60 Ghuznee Street, Te Aro was originally constructed circa 1908 and is currently listed on Wellington City Council’s ‘Heritage List’. It was originally constructed as a four-storey building for Cadbury and has undergone several minor alterations over the years including modifications to the internal layout and front facade and the addition of a lightweight structure at roof level in 1955, which was then altered in 1993 to its current form.

For the best strengthening design of this building, we worked extensively with our California office. The building has been proposed to be strengthened using state-of-the-art technology Buckling Restrained Braces (BRBs).
Our approach for the seismic strengthening design is to pinpoint the structural weaknesses and adopt a surgical approach to minimize intervention, cost and downtime. The building will soon meet 70 percent of New Building Standard (%NBS).

In addition to the engineering design, Miyamoto has provided a ‘Total Seismic Solution, fully managing all other aspects of compliance, design and construction. This includes all testing, regulatory consents, bank funding, insurance, project management, contractor procurement and construction delivery.
