To accommodate the increased arrivals and departures and to enhance security at the Hamid Karzai International Airport (HKIA) in Kabul, a new four-story air navigation facility, including a one-story utility building and control tower, is planned to be constructed. Given the importance of these structures, UNOPS is implementing an international structural review program to supplement the internal review process. Miyamoto led an independent engineering review of the design documents at various phases for the UNOPS compliance check. The project comprised of technical reviews, comments and recommendations of the conceptual, basic and detailed design documents, structural drawings, calculations and models, geotechnical reports, log of borings, geotechnical design parameters, MEP/fire, aviation planning and airport operability, and security considerations in the design of the tower and buildings.
