Miyamoto International was the design structural engineer for the Regional Intermodal Transportation Center at Burbank Bob Hope Airport, otherwise known as RITC, “Ritzy.” At the heart of the project was a 300,000-SF signature structure with a consolidated rental car facility, terminals for airport shuttle and transit bus services and visitor parking that doubles as an Essential Facility.

In addition to its diverse operational uses, the Airport Authority outlined extraordinarily high goals for the seismic performance and longevity of this facility. These needs were the drivers for a unique structural solution. To meet these objectives, Miyamoto used our “beyond code” design approach to incorporate more than 100 triple-pendulum bearing base isolators, allowing the structure to remain open and operational after a very large earthquake for emergency responders who plan to use it as a command center. Miyamoto was specifically engaged on this project for our command of innovative technologies and the seismic engineering expertise required for this first-of-its-kind structure. Miyamoto detailed the use of H-piles and mid-level isolation to minimize excavation.
