California Department of General Services, Tower Renovation, Central Plant Cooling

California Department of General Services, Tower Renovation, Central Plant Cooling

Originally built in 1968, the new facility is now one of the most energy efficient plants in the entire United States. The energy-saving features of the plant qualify it to be certified as LEED Platinum. This rating puts the facility in an elite class of buildings, in part because it meets stringent criteria for its energy usage and carbon footprint. The plant features highly efficient gas-fired steam boilers and a water-conserving cooling tower system and provides heating and cooling for 23 state offices, including the State Capitol building. The massive 4.2-million-gallon water tank is large enough to allow the system to create cold water at night during non-peak hours. Miyamoto completed the engineering for the fiber-reinforced plastic cooling tower.
