Elks Tower Seismic Upgrade

Elks Tower Seismic Upgrade

The historic Elks Tower was rehabilitated to accommodate retail space on the first floor and affordable office space on the upper floors. Miyamoto International designed a voluntary seismic upgrade for the building to reduce the risk of death, injury, and significant damage during an earthquake. The 14-story structure consists primarily of unreinforced masonry walls supported by a concrete beam-and-column system at the second floor. The seismic upgrade incorporated strengthened URM walls, braced frames, and friction dampers designed to achieve current code performance objectives and improve the building’s overall seismic resilience. Designed by architect Leonard J. Starks in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, the Elks Tower opened in 1926 and was one of Sacramento’s earliest skyscrapers.
