Gisborne Courts District & High Court Extension

Gisborne Courts District & High Court Extension

Miyamoto International NZ has partnered with the Ministry of Justice to deliver on time and within budget the improvements to the historically significant Gisborne Courts.

As a Ministry of Justice Alterations and Additions project, the existing court was extended to create space for the Family and Civil Courts. In addition, this $7 million project included work to the courthouse, new bail-out facilities and new car parking.

Key to the project was ensuring that the court remained operational throughout the construction period. Achieving this involved detailed planning and regular communication with the courthouse manager. This maintained security and allowed the court to continue operating effectively.

The historical significance of this site to local iwi also meant it was important the project was delivered with sensitivity and respect. The site required extensive archaeological investigation before and during construction as well as developing and following appropriate protocols. Ongoing communication and consultation with stakeholders during the design and construction stages was essential to keeping them well informed and the project on track.

This consultation involved multiple stakeholders, including iwi, the Police, the Department of Corrections, the judiciary and the Law Society.

The completion of this project follows on from the $1.2 million Wanganui Courts project that Miyamoto International NZ successfully delivered and continues the positive relationship that Miyamoto International NZ has with the Ministry of Justice
