King-Chavez Health Center

King-Chavez Health Center

This 25,000-SF clinic provides preventive care and comprehensive medical services for vulnerable and low-income residents. The three-story building offers family medicine, family counseling, prenatal care, women’s health center, pediatrics, HIV services, health education, radiology, laboratory and a dental clinic that is operated in partnership with A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health. Funding for the project was provided through a federal grant program administered by the Health and Human Resources Agency. Miyamoto International developed a high-resilience steel moment-resisting frame system to ensure the building’s safe performance in an earthquake and to create flexibility for end users. The design achieved LEED® NC v2009 certification. Between low-flow water and flush fixtures and water-wise landscaping, water consumption was reduced by 60 percent. Highly reflective roofing materials, efficient glazing, thermal comfort systems and economical lighting yielded a 28 percent raise in building energy savings, which bests Title 24 requirements.
