Les Cayes Hospital Laboratory Assessment

Les Cayes Hospital Laboratory Assessment

This two-story reinforced concrete structure had unreinforced masonry block infill walls that sustained a fair amount of damage during the earthquake of January 2010 and its resulting aftershocks. The laboratory is a critical part of the main hospital and cannot be out of commission after an earthquake. Miyamoto International completed a seismic rehabilitation for the clinic under the requirements of the 2009 International Building Code. This included considering Occupancy Category IV, with an importance factor of 1.5. Special reinforced concrete shear walls were strategically placed to work with the intended function of the building and provide resiliency against future earthquakes.
