When Matahari Terbit expanded its jewelry manufacturing operations onto adjacent land, it called on Miyamoto Italia to develop the structural schematic designs for a production building, residential building, guest house, villas, shop building and other service buildings. During this expansion, the company also worked to reinvent its brand through architecture, along with a radical transformation of production strategies, business and communication. The concept behind the expansion was a “garden style” factory. Inside, large windows protect from the sun’s rays while a landscape imbued with water and greenery is a strong and powerful element. Engineering challenges included creating a seismic design in an area at high risk of earthquakes utilizing the Indonesia seismic code.
