Port of Long Beach Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility

Port of Long Beach Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility

To make way for a more sustainable future, the Port of Long Beach is modernizing its on-dock support infrastructure to ship goods by rail rather than truck. This move will help reduce traffic congestion as more trains replace trucks. For example, one double-stacked intermodal train can eliminate up to 750 local truck trips. Trains are also more fuel efficient and can complete a journey faster than a truck; this is beneficial for the environment as well as business. Ultimately, “the expansion and reconfiguration of the existing Pier B rail yard will create a staging area for loading freight trains nearly two miles long, eliminating thousands of local truck trips.” Miyamoto assisted the prime consultant in the peer review of alterations to the existing 140,000-SF Crescent Warehouse in January 2021. Beginning in 2024, we will provide structural engineering for the design of ancillary structures and buildings for Phase II Rail Yard North and Phase III Rail Yard East.
