Residential Buildings (H4 and H7) at The Il Moro Complex

As a subcontractor to Tonelli Ingegneria, Miyamoto developed the structural design for the intervention of these two identical six-story residential buildings. The “II Moro” complex in L’Aquila was damaged during the M6.3 earthquake on April 9, 2009, and was one of the first buildings in Italy to be retrofitted. Many solutions were looked at in order to address earthquake safety, with the two most popular solutions being viscous dampers and friction pendulum isolators. The design incorporated the friction pendulum isolators, adding a double curvature, which made it possible to achieve the complete retrofit of the buildings at the code level requirements. The isolators were installed on the top of the first level columns and were developed in such a way so that the ground level area could be used as a park. Furthermore, an advanced non-linear time history analysis was developed to assess the behavior of the isolated structure.
