Santa Sofia is probably Padova’s most ancient church. It has a basilica plan with Romanesque-Gothic interior and Byzantine elements. Santa Sofia was built between the 11th and 12th centuries, perhaps on the remains of a pagan temple. The vault conserves a sacrificial stone and ruins of Roman foundations. The main front of the church is tilted slightly due to the soft soil. Miyamoto provided a peer review of the structure, and the church was renovated. The structures of the stone columns were strengthened using steel wires.
