San Juan Unified School District John Barrett Middle School

True to its mission to develop creative students with a passion for life-long learning, John Barret Middle School underwent new constructions and modernization of 16 buildings to give its students and staff a brand-new campus. In addition to a new science building fitted with 21st-century technology, the project included a new administration building, a new multipurpose room with a kitchen, fully upgraded classrooms, a library, restrooms, and gymnasiums. Miyamoto provided the structural engineering for both aspects of the project. The modernizations included targeted seismic upgrades, which presented unique challenges due to existing non-conforming construction materials, including low-strength concrete foundations. Other challenges encountered during construction included the presence of dry-rotted structural materials and as-built deviations to the DSA certified record construction documents. Furthermore, we provided support for the construction of a steel-framed dining/shade structure and other site amenities and features.
