Sandia National Laboratory Air-Cooled Chiller Conversion

Sandia National Laboratory Air-Cooled Chiller Conversion

Miyamoto International provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and structural engineering services to replace three existing 350-ton water-cooled chillers with two new 450-ton air-cooled chillers for the Central Utility Plant upgrade at Building 907. To increase water conservation at the campus, the existing concrete basin cooling tower was eliminated and replaced with energy-efficient air-cooled chillers. New piping and redundant pumping systems were also provided for increased system reliability and maintenance capabilities. The design involved converting an antiquated constant volume chilled water pumping system into variable flow to optimize cooling load demands. This required a DDC control system upgrade for the National Combustion Facility into the campus Siemens P1-protocol system. The scope of work also included civil engineering to re-grade the surrounding area to create a secure expanded equipment yard.
