Sutter Gould Medical Foundation is a four-story, 132,600 square foot, steel framed structure. This state-of-the-art medical center features outpatient surgery, diagnostic imaging and medical offices serving 14 specialties. Rather than utilizing a minimum-code-based design, we took a high-performance earthquake engineering approach to the design. Miyamoto engineers were able to reduce steel weight and the need for concrete grade beams with the use of fluid viscous dampers. The solution resulted in a $50,000 cost savings. In addition to cost savings, the resulting building is far more robust than a traditional code-based designed building and is designed to remain operational in the event of a large earthquake.
