The Campus @ Horton Plaza

The Campus @ Horton Plaza will convert the iconic one-million-SF, five-story, postmodern mall—built in 1985—from a ghost town into a mixed-use technology campus. This $330 Million conversion features an aggressive expansion of the existing Nordstrom building that adds five additional stories on top of the existing five-story structure, which had a voluntary seismic upgrade in 2009. To reduce costs and business interruption, Miyamoto’s structural design provides creative solutions to strengthen the existing columns, base plate and footings without replacing any steel or excavating under the existing footings. Our engineers plan to avoid delays by using a unique braced frame layout to sidestep any strengthening in the existing electrical vault. Additionally, we will be adding a new sawtooth-shaped roof that will allow plenty of natural light, avoiding a costly retrofit to the rest of the structure. The existing Bradley building, adjacent to the Horton Plaza Park, required a seismic upgrade for its existing moment frame and foundation systems so it could be modified into a food hall. The Campus @ Horton will be a thriving innovation hub with creative office space, entertainment, retail and restaurants that cater to leading technology and biotechnology companies.
