Location:

Year:

Client:

Arris Studio Architects

Scale:

10 Stories

Originally built in 1914, the California Fruit Building was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River at 10 stories tall. In 2021, the newly renovated Fruit Building reopened as a Hilton-branded hotel named The Exchange Sacramento. Located in the heart of downtown Sacramento, The Exchange is less than a mile away from the State Capitol, Golden One Center and the Old Sacramento Waterfront District.

The owner had been approached with other seismic retrofit solutions that did not meet their expectations, so they turned to Miyamoto International with the hope of a more cost-effective, creative solution that would preserve the historic fabric of the building and property. Our design added fluid viscous dampers at the ground floor to reduce the building’s response to earthquakes, and fiber reinforced polymer composite wrap around ground floor columns to increase their ductility. We also stiffened the tenth-floor columns with steel jackets to counter the disproportionately tall penthouse level.
