The Greek Theatre Seating Terrace Full Renovation

The Greek Theatre Seating Terrace Full Renovation

The Greek Theatre, an iconic outdoor concert, performance and events venue in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park, was to celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2020. Due to COVID-19, however, the venue was not able to open its doors for in-person celebrations. Nevertheless, this temporary pause turned out to be an excellent opportunity to dedicate the year to a much-needed seismic retrofit to the theatre’s elevated seating terraces. The LA Department of Recreation and Parks engaged Miyamoto International to develop an economical, minimally intrusive solution that would ensure their continued safe use in the near future. The project had to be completed in a single off-season. Using a dynamic model, we identified numerous seismic issues related to the terraces’ unusual shape, cantilever column seismic system and use of concrete pier foundations passing through varying layers of uncertified fill. Principal among these issues were extreme torsional irregularity and a concentration of seismic loading on four out of 24 columns beneath each terrace, which could lead to potential foundation failure. Our final design consisted of buckling-restrained braces with a system of drag struts and concrete grade beams to improve the distribution of seismic forces between the remaining columns and foundation piers, including sliding connections at the most rigid columns to prevent them from resisting seismic forces.
