The Scattergood Unit 3 Repowering Project

The Scattergood Unit 3 Repowering Project

The Scattergood Unit 3 Repowering Project was, and is, the first major step toward Los Angeles’s clean energy future. The project centered around improving fuel efficiency, reducing emissions and protecting the local marine habitats through modern, new technology that does not require the use of ocean water cooling. Miyamoto provided structural engineering services for the 19,000-SF Control Building, a four-story structure containing the Unit 3 DCS room, offices and storage facilities. The building was designed as a Risk Category IV, featuring composite floors that are supported by structural steel framing as well as seismic load resistance that is provided by buckling-restrained braced frames. Because it is located on a steep hillside, our engineers incorporated a 22-foot-tall concrete retaining wall in the building’s design. We also served as the Structural Engineer of Record for an associated 6,600-SF pre-engineered warehouse.
