The Traveler’s Hotel, built in the 1920s, is a 106,000-SF, seven-story, non-ductile, concrete building. In 1982, the building’s first retrofit incorporated chevron braced frames. In 2002, Miyamoto International enhanced the building’s performance by implementing state-of-the-art friction dampers at the base of the chevron tube steel braces. Friction dampers serve as shock absorbers when the building experiences dynamic movements such as those caused by an earthquake.
