Tokyo Bay (Rainbow) Bridge

Tokyo Bay (Rainbow) Bridge

Tokyo Bay Bridge is a suspension bridge crossing northern Tokyo Bay between the Shibaura Wharf and the Odaiba waterfront development in Minato, Tokyo, Japan. Completed in 1993, the bridge spans 570 metres and carries three transportation lines on two decks. The roofs of the anchorages (foundations fixing the suspension bridge main cables) have a curved surface which matches nicely with the catenary line of the main cables, giving the bridge a graceful profile. The bearing layer of the bridge foundations is soft rock called mudstone. Very few suspension bridge in the world have their foundations on mudstone. In addition, the bridge will have one of the world’s largest pneumatic caisson foundation.
