For this study, Miyamoto International experts conducted probabilistic seismic risk assessment of four of the largest towns in Northern Haiti to identify seismic hazards along with the vulnerability of city-wide infrastructure to advise government and development partners on risk mitigation measures. Although this area was unaffected by the 2010 earthquake in Haiti because of its distance from the epicenter, this vulnerable area is close to a major fault and has experienced very large earthquakes in the past. Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Waves tests were conducted at 61 locations throughout the project cities and the results were analyzed. Using well-known loss estimation technical references, fragility parameters for both concrete and unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings suitable for Haiti construction were determined. The study results can be used by the government, private sector and international agencies to plan sufficient resources to undertake seismic retrofitting of the most critical and vulnerable structures, and to develop response plans in preparation for future earthquakes.
