Indonesia faces significant natural disaster challenges, with the government spending $300-500 million annually on post-disaster reconstruction. Many businesses risk closure after a single disaster event. Recognizing this vulnerability, the USAID ADVANCE Indonesia Program aims to increase private sector disaster preparedness and involvement in disaster risk management to reduce casualties and socioeconomic disruption from earthquakes in Jakarta.
The program, implemented by Miyamoto International and supported by USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), works alongside Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Jakarta. The initiative focuses on advancing disaster risk governance through public-private engagement, improving disaster planning using better data, and developing local capacity through knowledge-sharing forums and practical tools.
Key beneficiaries include small and medium enterprises in Jakarta, which receive business resilience planning support, structural and non-structural mitigation recommendations, and participation in scenario exercises. The program aims to strengthen the private sector’s ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from earthquakes; increase business participation in disaster management; improve the availability of earthquake data for decision-making; and share practical tools across public and private sectors to support earthquake preparedness and information exchange.
