Yuba County Sheriff Facility

Yuba County Sheriff Facility

This adaptive re-use project entailed re-purposing and improving an existing two-story, tilt-up commercial office building into the new headquarters for the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department. A resilient design philosophy was central to the design of this essential services facility, including thoughtful consideration for both natural and human hazards. A change in occupancy to essential services triggered a seismic evaluation of the existing building for current code conformance. Located adjacent to the Yuba River and its levy, flooding and sniper hazards were also important in the building design and site improvements. Flood protection was achieved by placing the emergency operations center, dispatch, communications infrastructure and emergency generator on the second level. Security was enhanced by adding metal louvers at all second-floor windows and adding an inviting, yet robust, public entry structure. Other improvements include adding operable skylights for daylighting and ventilation, a new 180-foot communication tower, site security fencing and screen walls.
