California Fruit Building Transformed into Modern Hotel with Innovative Seismic Protection

A Sacramento landmark has been given new life through innovative engineering and thoughtful restoration. The California Fruit Building, originally constructed in 1914, once held the distinction of being the tallest building west of the Mississippi River, standing proudly at 10 stories and 135 feet high.

After an extensive renovation, this historic structure reopened in 2021 as The Exchange Sacramento, an elegant Hilton-branded hotel. The transformation preserves the building’s historic character while adapting it to meet modern hospitality standards.

Located in the heart of downtown Sacramento, The Exchange offers guests convenient access to the city’s most significant destinations. Visitors are just a short walk from the State Capitol, Golden 1 Center, and the charming Old Sacramento Waterfront District.

Miyamoto International played a crucial role in this revitalization project by providing a cost-effective and creative seismic retrofit solution. Understanding the importance of preserving the building’s historic elements, our engineering team designed a comprehensive system that includes:

  • Fluid viscous dampers to absorb seismic energy
  • Fiber-reinforced polymer wraps for structural reinforcement
  • Steel jackets to enhance stability

These modern engineering techniques were carefully implemented to strengthen the century-old structure while maintaining its architectural integrity. The project stands as a testament to how innovative engineering can breathe new life into historic buildings, ensuring they remain safe and functional for generations to come.
