GAYAN, Afghanistan – On June 22nd, 2022, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit the Paktika and Khost provinces of Afghanistan. The World Bank currently estimates $100 million USD in damages, with approximately 4,500 homes destroyed or heavily damaged.
On July 15th, experts Dr. Kit Miyamoto, Mark Broughton, and David Hodgkin deploy to Afghanistan to begin damage and repair assessments alongside the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and a team of Afghan engineers.
The experts from Miyamoto International, a global multi-hazard engineering and risk management firm, will help train local engineers to perform calculations of damage and repair options for homes, buildings, and other infrastructure. The engineers will use remote, app-based technology for real-time assessments that produce a QR code with damage and repair details for each building or homeowner, making recovery information easily accessible.
