Miyamoto International’s first project in Costa Rica is partnering with USAID/OFDA through the PREPARE program (Preparing Rescue and Emergency Personnel to Ameliorate the Response to Earthquakes) to provide city officials and first responders with a clearer picture of the impact of earthquake damage and assist Urban Search and Rescue to improve risk-management capacity. Through the development of Earthquake Risk Assessments, policy and practice changes the number of people injured, lives lost and economic disruption will eventually be reduced.
Under PREPARE, Miyamoto’s national and international engineers are working closely with USAID/OFDA to leverage their many years of institutional knowledge and experience in building consensus for the successful implementation of the PREPARE program.
These goals will be realized by focusing on three major tasks:
• Develop the information needed by first responders, municipal officials and staff to more fully understand the seismic risk in their city.
• Assist officials in improving planning for earthquakes and how best to implement damage assessments.
• Assist first responders in understanding the likely post-earthquake environment and how to prioritize their efforts.
