Cabaret

The “Haut Damier” residential development in the coastal town of Cabaret, Haiti involved the construction of 156 reinforced-concrete detached homes. Each pastel-painted house was constructed using a proprietary reusable form system. The houses were built as one-story buildings, but were engineered to allow the addition of a second level later.

Families displaced by the 2010 earthquake made up the majority of those selected for the homes; many were living in tent villages before moving into Haut Damier. The houses have two rooms, a bath with shower and kitchen — all in 518 square feet. Residents have created gardens for food and pay $45 a month for five years and then the homes are theirs.

Miyamoto is the Engineer of Record for all of the homes. Miyamoto provided structural engineering and quality-assurance services (for house construction only). The design was per the International Building Code to ensure earthquake and hurricane safety standards.
