The California Unity Center is a new 3-story structure that houses a museum with space for exhibits, performing arts and workshops. The facility is used by the California Department of Education and it complies with the California Division of State Architect’s requirements. This steel moment frame building features “fritted” glass facades, a café with expansive exterior openings at the first floor and community function / multi-purpose and office space with a large entertainment deck on the third floor. Exterior materials are primarily glass, metal roofing and handrails and honed sandstone as the non-glazed walls. Beyond the glass exterior walls, special building features include a glass elevator in the atrium, custom glass stairs suspended from a space frame truss in the atrium and custom terrazzo floors.
