Dr. Kit Miyamoto, CEO of Miyamoto International, recently discussed the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore with Anderson Cooper. The bridge, built in 1977, was struck by the cargo ship Dali, which had lost power. Dr. Miyamoto emphasized that the bridge’s “fracture critical” design, common in older bridges, meant that a single point of failure could lead to a complete collapse. He emphasized the importance of reevaluating aging infrastructure to ensure it can withstand various potential hazards, such as impacts from large vessels, natural disasters, and evolving environmental conditions.
